Big and Small Blocks
The Center for Art in Wood, Philadelphia
2015

Big and Small Blocks is part of an exhibition titled “Other Selections” in which Philadelphia-based artist collective members were invited by The Center for Art in Wood to make works that respond to the center’s collection. Big and Small Blocks is inspired by Garry Knox Bennett’s Pre Turned-Wood Object, Bob Stockdale’s turned bowls, and David Pye’s bowls and writings.

This work references my own family lineage as my paternal grandfather was a pattern maker who also built small engines and race cars. The “bowls” in these “blocks” are created by hanging a router from a cable to the ceiling to achieve an arc, a technique my grandfather once used in his shop to create a radius for a pattern.
